Chapter Eight

Alicia wouldn’t let Ian in. His keys were gone along with his coat, his shirt, and his shoes. He stood dripping in the hall, leaning one hand on the door frame.

“Your roommate has lost his friggin’ mind!” she called out from behind the door.

“My roommate?” Dijeree squealed, her little feet thumping across the wood floor. She threw open the door and pulled up short at the sight of him. “What the hell happened?”

“Don’t let him in, Dij. He’s gone psycho killer on us,” Alicia said from somewhere behind her.

Dijeree raked her gaze up and down Ian’s bare chest and mud-spattered jeans. Her look assessed his scratched feet, ice-encrusted hair, and then landed on the dagger still clutched in his fist. She stepped back and held the door more firmly between them. “Have you gone psycho killer on us, Ian?”

He shook his head and brushed past her, in no mood for words or explanations. He knew she deserved one, but he was exhausted. He’d walked from the canal in a daze, not feeling the cold or the judgment of alarmed neighbors. He fell on the couch and dropped the dagger on the coffee table on top of Cleona’s Big Book of Scary Shit, as it happened. He lay on his side, curled his knees up, and pulled a hand-knitted afghan up to his chin.

Dijeree plopped down beside him on the couch and sprawled across him, her face pressed into his back.

“Does this have something to do with your elf kink?” Alicia asked.

“Does she have to be here?” Ian croaked.

“She was just leaving. Weren’t you, Lish?”

“I just got here! Oh, okay, fine. But don’t expect me to come running back when you call.”

The door slammed, and Dij whispered in his ear, “She will.”

She sat up and rubbed his back. “What happened? I thought you’d been snagged for sure. One minute you were talking to Zeke, the next, you both vanished. I looked all over the park. I even called Alistair.”

“And what did Alistair say?” Ian asked, interested in spite of his exhaustion.

“He said you were dead meat. That I might as well get on with my life and rent your room out to Alicia.”

“Great to know he’s got my back.”

“I should call Cleona and tell her you’re okay. You are okay, aren’t you?”

“I don’t know yet. Zeke’s not.”

“Do we care about Zeke?”

“I do.” Ian sat up, wrapped the afghan tight around his shoulders, and leaned back. “We’re two parts of a whole.”

“Did he hex you again?” Dijeree curled up next to him and ran a finger along the root burns on his wrist.

“He tried to drain my power so I’d be weak enough to pull into the dark realm and destroy completely.”

“And this is the guy you’re worried about?”

“He’s not free. He does what he does under orders of the Dark Queen.”

“That is so awesome… I mean, not awesome, but well, awe inspiring. Wild. I got some great shots of him.”

“You did?” Ian perked up a little. Not only the dagger, but Zeke’s image on film created a link to the svarta.
